If you have been wearing glasses and contact lenses to correct your vision for any length of time, you may have considered other options. One of the most popular alternatives to glasses and contact lenses is LASIK surgery.

What Is LASIK?

LASIK, which stands for “Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis,” is a popular surgical procedure used to correct vision problems, particularly nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. The goal of LASIK is to reduce or eliminate the need for eyeglasses or contact lenses.

Ever wonder what eye surgery is really like? Watch Dr. Drew Thomas’ LASIK journey as we take you inside Dr. Smith’s operating room and witness the immediate post-surgery results.

Who Can Get LASIK?

LASIK is popular, but unfortunately, not everyone is a candidate. To be a candidate for LASIK surgery, you must be:

  • Over the age of 18
  • Free of eye disease and certain diseases that indirectly affect the eyes
  • Not pregnant or nursing
  • Have had a stable glasses or contact lens prescription for at least one year

You may need to meet other requirements depending on the surgeon you go to. Before you can determine whether or not you are a LASIK candidate, you will need to see us for a LASIK consultation!

During your LASIK consultation, our surgeons will ask you a series of questions and examine your eyes to make sure you are a good LASIK candidate. If all goes well, you can schedule your LASIK surgery date!

Your LASIK surgery at North Idaho Eye Institute will take around 10 minutes per eye. You will be at our facility for approximately one hour. During your surgery, our expert LASIK surgeon will talk you through what they are doing and what to expect during each part of the surgery. You will have the option to take a mild oral sedative to remain calm during surgery, should you need it. The surgery requires no stitches and will be over before you know it.

You should arrange a ride home, as you will not be able to drive after your procedure. Recovering from LASIK is famously easy, although there are some aftercare procedures you will need to follow to ensure proper healing.
